For Individuals with an ASD

Jonathan Hackitt

Jonathan is an individual with Asperger syndrome and is on our Management Committee; his role within the Birmingham Branch is Play Supervisor. He offers a valuable insight into the complexities and challenges that face someone with Asperger syndrome. Jonathan is 35 and lives independently in the East Birmingham area. Jon works full time at Solihull School in the kitchen and enjoys his eight and a half hour working day. His daily routine begins with time for prayer as he is a committed Christian and he travels by bus to Solihull. He adheres to a strict routine when travelling; “I always make sure that I sit on one side of the bus so I can see the empty houses. I like to see the derelict houses to see if anyone is going to live there” He enjoys living on his own; however he has help from a supporter who is from his local church; “All of my bills are paid by direct debit so I do not have to worry about that too much. My helper Andy is always ready to assist if I need help with things”

Jonathan understandably has worries for the future; “I do worry about when my parents are no longer around. I hope I will have someone to help me make arrangements as I have no brothers or sisters and I will need help to deal with my loss, but I hope it will not be for a long time yet!”
